Voices and Avatars with AI

Voices and Avatars with AI

During 2023, voice cloning went from a lab trick to something anyone can try from a laptop. With just a few minutes of audio, artificial intelligence tools learn a person’s timbre, rhythm, and even their verbal tics, and then make them “say” phrases they never uttered. In parallel, digital avatars—faces that talk, gesture, and look at the camera—became convincing enough to star in a corporate video without an actor setting foot on set.

For a small business in Mexico this opens two conversations at the same time, and it’s worth having them together. On one hand, there’s a real opportunity to produce content and service more quickly and cheaply. On the other, the same technology that helps you record a tutorial also serves to impersonate your CFO on a call and request an urgent transfer. Understanding both sides is what separates those who use the tool wisely from those who end up being a victim of it.

What you can do today with voices and avatars

The bright side of this technology is that it greatly lowers the cost of tasks that used to require a studio, a camera, and hours of editing. It’s not about replacing your team, but about taking away repetitive work so they can focus on what does require judgment.

  • Training and manuals on video. Turn your written procedures into videos with a digital presenter, in several languages, without re-recording every time a detail changes.
  • More human phone service. Today’s synthetic voices sound natural and work for confirmations, appointment reminders, or answers to frequently asked questions, with a warm and consistent tone.
  • Marketing content at scale. Voiceovers for social media, short spots, and product presentations that used to depend on scheduling a voice actor.
  • Accessibility. Automatic narration of your catalog or your posts for customers who prefer to listen rather than read.

The point isn’t to adopt it all at once, but to choose a concrete case where the savings are clear and the result can be measured.

The same technology that creates content can also imitate a person: that's why it matters to use it with clear rules.

The risk you can’t ignore: voice fraud

If your voice can be cloned with a few seconds of audio, so can your manager’s, your accountant’s, or your own. There have already been cases of scams where someone receives a call with the “real” voice of a boss asking to move money immediately. Urgency and familiarity are exactly what make people act without verifying.

The rule is simple: no sensitive instruction is carried out just because it “sounds” like the right person.

The defense isn’t primarily technological, it’s a matter of process. An orderly business, with clear steps to authorize payments and important changes, is much harder to deceive than one where everything is settled with a hurried call.

How to protect yourself without slowing the operation

Protecting yourself doesn’t mean distrusting everyone, it means having clear agreements before the problem happens:

  • Double verification for money. Any transfer or change of bank details is confirmed through a second channel (a callback to a known number, not the one that called).
  • Internal keywords. A simple code among the people who authorize payments helps validate that the voice on the other end really is who it claims to be.
  • Nothing urgent is done without a record. Put in writing who can request what and by what means; urgency is the scammer’s favorite tool.
  • Train your team. Knowing that a voice can now be faked is half the protection.

Your first avatar video

Treat this like any other business tool: start small and measurable. Choose a single use case with a clear return—for example, turning your three most consulted manuals into avatar videos—and evaluate the real time savings before scaling.

At the same time, spend an afternoon shielding your payment processes with double verification; it’s the cheapest and highest-impact investment you can make this month. If you’re going to integrate voices or avatars into your systems, do it with custom software that keeps your data, processes, and history under your control, instead of uploading sensitive information to platforms you don’t govern.

Voice cloning is already part of the landscape, with its useful side and its dangerous side. At Normandia Web we can help you take advantage of the former without exposing yourself to the latter: let’s talk and design that first case to fit you.
