Throughout 2025 we once again read dazzling headlines about private nuclear fusion: enormous funding rounds, promises of almost unlimited clean energy, and dates that seemed to bring the future right around the corner. A handful of startups compete to be the first to fire up a commercial reactor, and every lab advance is announced as if the goal were already within reach. It’s exciting, and much of it is real, valuable science.

But there’s an enormous difference between an experiment that works under controlled conditions and a technology ready to operate every day, at a reasonable cost and with predictable results. That gap between “we demonstrated it once” and “it already works in production” isn’t unique to fusion: it’s exactly the same care a Mexican small business needs every time it’s sold the next big technology solution. Learning to read that difference saves you money, time, and frustration.

What is real and what is still a promise

Fusion leaves us a useful lesson: it’s worth distinguishing between three things that are often presented all mixed together. There’s what’s already proven and working, what’s promising but still immature, and what’s pure marketing enthusiasm. Confusing them is what leads to expensive decisions.

  • How do I measure the result? Define from the start which number or process should improve, and in how much time.

These questions don’t kill innovation: they organize it. They let you take advantage of what already works without getting trapped in promises that might take years to be fulfilled.

How to apply this criterion at your company

  • Start with something small and provable. Choose a single process —the one that hurts most— and automate or improve it first. A small, provable win opens the door to the next.
  • Prioritize control of your data. Any serious solution lets you keep your information and history, with no locks tying you to a provider.
  • Ask for evidence, not promises. Request to see the tool operating and real cases before committing budget.
  • Define the expected result. Put a number and a date on it: what should improve and when you’ll review it.
  • Surround yourself with someone who translates technology into your business. You don’t need the most advanced solution in the world, but the one that solves your problem and grows with you.
